  • Cyber war of world giants: China accuses the US of attacking Huawei

The tale of cyberespionage appears to have recently become more captivating.

Beijing has formally acknowledged the attack nearly ten years after Edward Snowden's leaked documents revealed that the US National Security Agency (NSA) had breached the servers of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei.

According to a report issued by the Department of State Security on Wednesday, the NSA's Office of Tailored Access Operations (TAO) "systematically conducted attacks" against China in an effort to steal "critical data."

The report, which was posted on the ministry's official social media platform, stated that "TAO started hacking into servers at Huawei's headquarters in 2009 and continued to monitor them."

Computer network operations (CNO) is the new name for TAO, the NSA's cyberwarfare intelligence unit. Former NSA contractor Snowden revealed in internal documents published in 2013 that the organization had targeted Huawei's Shenzhen headquarters among other targets.

Along with Huawei Technologies, the department's report pointed to Northwestern Polytechnic University's hack in September 2022 as another instance of China turning into a top target for US cyber espionage.

Less than a week ago, the department announced that during its investigation into the recent cyberattack on Northwestern Polytechnic University, it had discovered NSA operatives.

According to a report titled "Uncovering the Key Methods of Cyberattacks and Covert Theft by U.S. Intelligence Agencies," the NSA has developed a "powerful arsenal of cyberattacks" to snoop on and steal secrets from various nations.

The department claimed that the US government coerced businesses into opening back doors on their systems by using the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Another US company, Anomaly Six, is also mentioned in the report. It is claimed that Anomaly Six has integrated its tracking software development kit into numerous mobile apps.

Long considered a security risk, US officials have prohibited Huawei from doing business in the country and with its allies. In an effort to learn more about how Huawei's routers and digital switches function, the NSA hacked the company's headquarters, per Snowden's documents.

The operation, known by the codename Shotgiant, tried to use Huawei technology so that hardware supplied to other nations would grant the NSA access to telephone and computer networks.
