  • 'Hacker hoodie' can blind security cameras

Mac Pierce, an American engineer and privacy advocate, has developed a one-of-a-kind sweatshirt that dazzles night vision cameras.

The "Camera Shy Hoodie" is a self-made anti-surveillance hoodie. At its core, in addition to the sweatshirt itself, there are 12 powerful infrared LEDs sewn around the wearer's neck, front and back. And with a switch sewn into the sleeve, the sweatshirt wearer can make the LEDs flash stroboscopically, flooding any nearby security cameras with infrared light and completely blinding them at night. And since the LEDs are infrared, the glow will not be noticeable to the ordinary human eye, which will not create inconvenience to others.

Pierce's sweatshirt is the latest in wearable privacy. It can be seen as part of an existing social movement that includes anti-face recognition make-up, baseball caps, and clothing that confuses automatic license plate readers and confuses object recognition.

Night vision cameras themselves are equipped with the same infrared LEDs to capture the picture in complete darkness. When LEDs of similar power get into the field of view of such a camera, they simply violate the set video exposure, creating strong glare and overexposure. Thus, although the LEDs are not built into the sweatshirt hood itself, but are located just below the neck, the glare is still so powerful that it completely covers the wearer's face.

The developer of the "anonymous hoodie" spent about $ 200 to create it, since the assembly used mostly ready-made components. Pierce also published all the software and assembly instructions so that anyone can make their own sweatshirt.

Rumor has it that if you connect such a sweatshirt to Flipper Zero, you can avoid traffic jams and always drive through a green traffic light.

Previously, the same author designed the so-called "Opt-Out Cap" - a baseball cap designed to anonymize its owner in the face recognition system, and in a very interesting and unusual way.

Pierce himself justifies his inventions by increased government controls in many countries. So that those citizens who want to "fight back" widespread surveillance and introduce anonymity into their lives have such an opportunity.
