  • How to bypass the bank's voice authentication system using neural networks

An artificially generated voice deceived the security system and opened access to a bank account.

An expert from Motherboard called the bank's call center and, using an artificially generated voice, asked to check the balance. The robot then asked to enter or say a date of birth as the first part of the authentication.

After that, it was necessary to say the phrase to enter: "My vote is my password." The expert played back the sound file from the computer. The security system identified the voice and opened up access to bank account information, including the balance and a list of recent transactions and transfers. It is worth noting that in some banks you can also transfer funds by phone.

In this case, the specialist used the free voice generation service from ElevenLabs. To create the voice, the author of the experiment recorded about 5 minutes of his speech and uploaded it to ElevenLabs. Synthetic voice spoke any typed text.

This test was carried out at the British bank Lloyds Bank, but failed several times - the Lloyd Bank system could not authenticate the voice. After making some tweaks to the ElevenLabs settings, such as reading longer text to make phrase endings sound more natural, the generated audio successfully bypassed the bank's security system.

For this particular attack, the scammer needs to know the victim's date of birth, which is easy to find in a lot of data breaches on the Internet, from access brokers, or people who reveal their date of birth on social media.

Lloyds Bank said it is aware of the threat of synthetic votes, but has not seen any instances where such a voice has been used to scam its customers. Synthetic voices are not as attractive to fraudsters as other much more common methods, Lloyds Bank said, and voice recognition has led to a significant drop in phone banking fraud.

Some experts are now urging banks to phase out voice authentication entirely, although real-world abuse may be rare these days.

Banks in the US and Europe use voice verification to access an account over the phone. But this experiment shatters the notion that voice-based biometric security provides strong protection in a world where anyone can now generate synthetic voices cheaply, and sometimes for free.
