  • Cannabis lovers have worse memory

    Researchers at the University of Washington conducted a study on the effects of cannabis use on people's cognitive abilities. Scientists have found that cannabis users have a worse memory than those who do not take cannabinoids.

    The trials involved 100 cannabis users and 98 non-cannabinoid users aged 18 to 39. 46 cannabis users smoked only marijuana, 53 used marijuana and cannabinoid concentrates, and one volunteer preferred only concentrates. The category of cannabis users included people who took cannabinoids at least three times a week for at least one year. And the group of volunteers who did not use cannabis included subjects who took cannabinoids less than 10 times in their lives and did not do this for at least the last year.

    Sober volunteers passed 12 tests to determine the level of development of cognitive abilities and filled out questionnaires. After analyzing the data obtained, the experts found that:

    • study participants from different groups did not differ significantly from each other in age, stress and depression levels, as well as intelligence quotient;
    • compared with people who did not take cannabinoids, marijuana smokers had 35% worse episodic prospective memory, and lovers of concentrates and marijuana had 50% worse;
    • instant verbal memory among users of marijuana and concentrates was worse by 14%;
    • delayed verbal memory in marijuana smokers was worse by 16%, and in lovers of concentrates and marijuana by 14%.

    The rest of the tested types of memory and cognitive functions worked about equally well for all volunteers. In this regard, the results of the experiments suggest that the use of cannabis does not reduce the quantitative assessment of the level of human intelligence, however, regular use of cannabinoids impairs the ability to remember and recall one's intentions (prospective memory), words, and also abstract concepts (verbal memory). At the same time, marijuana smokers were not prone to attention disorder and even boasted a 3% increase in RAM.

    Workers at the University of Washington were able to confirm the assumption that the use of cannabis impairs memory. The researchers concluded that smoking marijuana has a mild effect on this cognitive ability. However, the results of earlier trials, indicating a negative effect of cannabinoids on decision making, attention and speed of psychomotor reaction, have not been proven.

    The fact that marijuana smokers scored higher than people who used both marijuana and concentrates may be due to the different levels of THC in the products. In marijuana, the concentration of cannabinoid does not exceed 30%, and in concentrates it reaches 80%. However, experts believe that the difference in the functioning of the memory of volunteers from these groups is not significant.
