Germany
In Germany, more than a quarter of the adult population have used illicit drugs during their lifetime, while less than 1 in 10 have done so in the last 12 months; of these, about half have used illicit drugs in the last 30 days. The 2015 studies indicated that cannabis remains by far the most common illicit drug in Germany among both adults and adolescents. In 2015, amphetamine was for the first time reported to be the most popular stimulant used by German adults in the last 12 months, followed by cocaine and MDMA. About 2.8 % of adults in Germany had used any kind of new psychoactive substances (NPS), while about 2.2 % of young adults (18-25 years) indicated use of these substances in the past.
UK
In the United Kingdom, drug consumption frequently occurs within social gatherings or party environments. With an estimated 313,971 individuals (between the ages of 15 and 64) estimated to be drug users across the country, dependency on substances continues to impact numerous lives each year. It comes as no surprise that cannabis remains the most prevalent illicit drug in 80% of regions in the UK. Additionally, the potent hallucinogenic known as LSD, or 'acid,' is widely used throughout the country. Pertaining to law enforcement seizures, research reveals a staggering 207% increase in police confiscations since 2010.
Turkey
Cannabis and inhalants are reported as the most commonly used drugs in Turkey. However in lesser proportions, common use of Heroin and other Opiates, Benzodiazepines and Barbiturates are also reported. There are reported trends of
increased drug use in all the cities. Therefore, there are increased trends in the use of solvents, Cannabis and Ecstasy reported from all cities as well as trends in increased use of Benzodiazepines, Heroin and injecting drug use in some cities along with these substances. Increased availability and decreased prices are cited as the two primary reasons for increased use of different drugs reported from the cities. This is especially significant for increase in solvents and Ecstasy use.
Spain
The prevalence of use of illicit substances in Spain has been relatively stable over the last few years, with approximately one third of the adult population reporting lifetime use of an illicit substance. Cannabis, followed by cocaine, is the most commonly used drug, with use mainly concentrated among adolescents and adults below 35 years. Although the latest available data from the 2015 general population study confirm that the prevalence of use of both substances has declined in the last 10 years, the levels of cannabis and cocaine use in Spain remain higher than in other European Union countries. The available data highlight that ‘experimentation’ with cannabis has become more ‘habitual’ among today’s younger Spanish generation; however, although persistent use remains low, those who continue to use cannabis do so almost daily.
Poland
In Poland, cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug among the general population, followed by amphetamines, MDMA/ecstasy and cocaine. Drug use is mainly concentrated among young adults, with those aged 25-34 years being more likely than younger or older adults to report using an illicit substance during the last year. In 2014, 1 in 10 young adults aged 15-34 years reported using cannabis in the last year. The prevalence of cannabis use increased between the 2006 and 2014 surveys.
Krakow participates in the Europe-wide annual wastewater campaigns undertaken by the Sewage Analysis Core Group Europe (SCORE). This study provides data on drug use at a community level, based on the levels of different illicit drugs and their metabolites in sources of wastewater. In 2016, amphetamine was the most prevalent target drug residue measured in wastewater in Krakow. The levels of metabolites of methamphetamine, cocaine and MDMA detected in wastewater were low, indicating limited use of these substances in Krakow.
