  • A new browser from Tor and Mullvad has appeared with increased privacy without the Tor network

The Tor team and VPN provider Mullvad have jointly launched Mullvad Browser, a web browser focused on protecting user privacy. Technically based on the Firefox engine, Mullvad Browser incorporates most of the changes from the Tor Browser, but does not use the Tor network by making requests directly (an analogue of the Tor Browser without Tor). Mullvad Browser is designed for users who do not want to work through the Tor network, but who want to use the privacy enhancement, tracking blocking, and identity protection mechanisms available in Tor Browser. Mullvad Browser is not affiliated with Mullvad VPN and can be used by anyone. The browser code is distributed under the MPL 2.0 license, and development takes place in the Tor project repository.

The main purpose of the Mullvad browser is to make it harder for advertisers and other companies to track users on the Internet. To do this, it uses the reduction of "footprints" of the browser - the metadata that sites collect to identify the device. Mullvad masks this information by blocking third-party cookies and trackers. The program includes pre-installed plugins that help minimize the "trace" left.

At its core, Mullvad is a clone of FireFox, similar to the Tor browser. Advanced users can customize FireFox to achieve a similar level of protection. Mullvad provides the maximum level of "invisibility" immediately after installation, without the need for lengthy settings. In addition, Mullvad is easier and more convenient to use than Tor, which can cause problems when working with regular sites.

To prevent user movement from being tracked and identify unique characteristics of a particular visitor, the WebGL, WebGL2, Social, SpeechSynthesis, Touch, WebSpeech, Gamepad, Sensors, Performance, AudioContext, HTMLMediaElement, Mediastream, Canvas, SharedWorker, Permissions, MediaDevices.enumerateDevices APIs and screen.orientation have been disabled or restricted. Telemetry sending tools, Pocket, Reader View, HTTP Alternative-Services, MozTCPSocket, "link rel=preconnect" have also been deactivated and data is only provided about some installed fonts. To prevent identification by window size, the letterboxing mechanism is activated, which adds margins around the content of web pages. The password manager has also been removed.
