  • Australia legalizes psychedelic therapy

The Australian authorities passed a law legalizing psilocybin and MDMA therapy for all adult residents and visitors to the country. Formally, starting from July this year, the country's Ministry of Health will begin certification of specialists and organizations that will be allowed to offer such treatment to the public. The law states that the use of psilocybin and MDMA in treatment will only be permitted in relation to the treatment of a number of serious and chronic mental illnesses, such as persistent depression and PTSD. However, in addition to the narrow range of diagnoses allowed for treatment, access to psychedelic therapy will also be limited financially, according to the scientist and specialist in the study of psychoactive substances, Stephen Bright, who teaches at Edith Cowan University.

“Although the new system will greatly simplify the procedure for importing and using MDMA and psilocybin for therapeutic purposes, these drugs will still have to be certified by the Ministry of Health and imported into Australia from abroad. Potential clients of the new therapy centers will have to pay between $1,000 and $2,000 just to bring a dose of the drug into the country,” he says.
“Given the factors that the therapy will require more than one serving of the drug, and also that the treatment center will have to be serviced by certified and trained specialists, it can be assumed that the final price for even the most modest course of psychedelic therapy will cost the customer 25 or 30 thousand dollars. Only very wealthy people can afford such an amount, but definitely not representatives of the middle or working class.”
“Obviously, the authorities are already aware of the possible prices for this type of treatment, however, despite this, they are in no hurry to include a new type of therapy in the types of medical services covered by insurance,” the doctor also says. “According to the regulators, the procedure for certification of clinics itself may take about a year more. During this period, the authorities may remedy the situation by including psychedelic therapy as an insurable form of treatment. Otherwise, these clinics will remain a very exclusive place where only the richest patients can go.”

Other experts, such as the director of the Center for the Study of Psychedelic Medicine at Monash University, Dr. Paul Liknaitzky, do not believe that even full coverage of drug import costs will be able to make the procedure affordable for all residents of the country.

“Given other requirements for clinics, in particular, the costs of certifying the institution and the doctors working in it, as well as the simple fact that they, as a private business, will be required to bring profit to investors, it will still turn out that the client will have to shell out about 10,000 dollars for a basic course of treatment,” he notes. “It is possible that it will only be possible to really bring down the price of such services over time, thanks to the growth in the number of institutions and experts servicing them, as well as the emergence of possible alternative drug supply channels, such as local production.”
