  • how did Telegram become the new cyber scam den?

Now everyone can become a hacker, ordinary Internet users should be even more vigilant!

Kaspersky Lab recently noted a new trend in the phishing cybercrime business. According to researchers, the Telegram messenger has recently become much more often used by hackers and other intruders to sell and even distribute malicious phishing products and services for free. Entire online communities are formed around the topic of phishing.

The company’s report notes that with a strong desire, you can find any services and tools related to Internet phishing on the popular platform. For example:

Free kits with pre-packaged tools that allow users to create their own phishing pages that imitate well-known brands.
Automatic creation of phishing pages to collect user data using a Telegram bot.
Premium phishing and scam pages with a customizable interface, anti-bots, geo-blocking, URL encryption and even social engineering elements.
Constantly updated databases of stolen personal data and online banking credentials.
Phishing as a Service (PhaaS) subscriptions that provide access to tools, beginner guides, technical support, and regular detection protection updates.
Subscription OTP bots that help phishers bypass 2FA protection automatically.

Some reputation-conscious vendors sell these data sets in encrypted form so that no one can access the tools and information without paying for them.

The researchers claim that Telegram is also a place where aspiring scammers can get acquainted with the phishing business for free. More experienced phishers create Telegram channels with bots that provide step-by-step instructions for creating a phishing page. The process is fully automated and ends up generating links to fake websites that imitate popular brands and services registered by the bot controller.

A novice phisher can only distribute such links and wait until the confidential information from the victims is transferred to the bot. Everyone here is in the black: both the client and the seller of the service. After all, a copy of the received data will remain with both participants in this interaction. This means that the seller, at the expense of the client, updates and replenishes his databases of personal data of the victims.

The offer of the above services via Telegram not only greatly reduces the entry barrier for inexperienced attackers and novice phishers, but also enriches sellers of such services due to the large influx of customers. Still, it is much easier to enter a simple Telegram channel than conventional darknet platforms. Yes, and there are also bots with step-by-step instructions - beauty!

Kaspersky Lab says it has detected more than 2.5 million malicious URLs generated by phishing kits in the past six months and has prevented 7.1 million user attempts to access such malicious websites in the same period.

These figures reflect the massive scale of phishing operations. Their growth and the prosperity of the cyber-intruder business became possible thanks to the uncontrolled distribution of ready-made kits and services via Telegram.
