  • Marijuana and stroke: is there a reationship?

Today we will talk about the connection between cannabis and the development of stroke, this topic has been repeatedly studied, since THC includes "receptors" CB1 and CB2 in the central nervous and cardiovascular systems.

Robert Harrington, MD, president of the American Heart Association, said, "As these products are increasingly used throughout the country, getting clearer, scientifically accurate data will be essential as we try to understand the overall health effects of cannabis."

So, at the end of 2019, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) published a report in which it was found that “frequent use of cannabis (marijuana) among young people is associated with an increased risk of stroke”, as well as an increase in heart rhythm disorders or arrhythmias. Published by the American Heart Association, the study did not look at a direct link between stroke and cannabis use, but found it to be a potential link.

The study found that young cannabis users have an increased risk of stroke compared to people who did not use cannabis. Interestingly, the study also indicated that “cannabis users may also be more likely to be heavy drinkers, current cigarette users, and e-cigarette users, which may have also affected their risk.”

Study author Tarang Parekh, MBBS, MS, a health policy researcher at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, said:

"Young cannabis users, especially those who use tobacco and have other stroke risk factors such as high blood pressure, should be aware that they may increase their risk of stroke at a young age."

The link between cannabis and increased risk of stroke has been studied several times since THC activates CB1 and CB2 "receptors" in the central nervous and cardiovascular systems. One study in 2013 found that CB1 receptors that work overtime can often lead to a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular disorders in the valve and arteries.

    What's the conclusion?

It's important to remember that while medical marijuana is on the rise, medical professionals still don't have important information about how cannabis affects all parts of the body. The hope is that the FDA continues to step up research to demonstrate not only the powerful benefits of the drug, but also its potential risks.
