  • Mutual attacks of hackers: Lazarus Group against Euler Finance cracker

Lazarus Group, which hacked the Ronin blockchain bridge, is now hunting for the attacker who stole $200 million from the Euler Finance protocol.

The North Korean pro-government hackers Lazarus Group, responsible for hacking the Ronin blockchain bridge in March 2022 and stealing $625 million worth of assets from the Axie Infinity crypto project, attempted to gain access to the wallet of the attacker who stole $200 million from the Euler Finance protocol.

Euler Finance is an Ethereum-based DeFi platform offering crypto lending services. The platform was hacked on March 13, when a hacker stole approximately $197 million from the protocol in various cryptocurrencies, including DAI, WBTC, stETH, and USDC.

Suspected of involvement in the North Korean group Lazarus, the Ronin hackers sent an online message to the attacker from the Euler protocol with a request to decode the encrypted message. However, according to experts, it was actually a phishing request to steal the Euler hacker's wallet credentials.

A few minutes after receiving this message, the developers of Euler Finance tried to warn "their" attacker from the alleged attack by sending him a warning transaction.

The exchange of messages between the hackers began on March 17, when the attacker Euler transferred 100 ETH to a wallet associated with the Lazarus group. The reasons for this action are still unknown.

The developers of Euler, warning the hacker, also stated that the best solution for him would be to return the stolen funds. Currently, negotiations are underway between the parties.

On March 21, the attacker told the developers that he wants to find a solution for all the victims and does not intend to take what does not belong to him, offering to establish secure communication and negotiate. This is reported by Certik, a company specializing in blockchain security.
