  • The California Department of the Treasury fell victim to LockBit

The California Governor's Office of Emergency Management confirmed that the Treasury Department was affected by the cyber incident, but did not provide too many details. The breach was discovered thanks to state and federal security partners. As officials say, information security specialists are now working on assessing and detecting possible vulnerabilities and mitigating the consequences of a cyber attack.

It is unclear how much damage was caused by the hackers and how they managed to break into the department's systems. All that is known is that public funds were not affected by the attack.

But before any official statements, LockBit added the department to the list of its victims and reported that they managed to steal databases, confidential data, financial and IT documents. As evidence of their words, the hackers published on the dark web several screenshots of files that were stolen from the systems of the California Department of the Treasury.

The hackers also reported that they managed to steal more than 246,000 files or 75.3 GB of data. Now the group has put the department on the counter - the ransom must be paid before December 24, otherwise all the stolen data will be merged into the darknet.
