  • The cost of an error for a young American hacker was $5.2 million.

The teenager must return the cryptocurrency that was taken from investors, along with his stolen BMW i8.

Young hacker who is accused of stealing cryptocurrency from Northern Californian cryptocurrency investors has been ordered by a federal judge to pay the US government nearly $5.2 million in Bitcoin and hand over his sports car. The local press covered this.

In 2016, when he was 18 years old, Tucson, Arizona teenager Ahmad Wagaafe Hared started working with two accomplices to steal cryptocurrency. The criminals first acquired the names and phone numbers of cryptocurrency investors and project managers. They allegedly got in touch with mobile phone service providers after that and persuaded staff members that they were the true owners of the victims' phone numbers. SIM swapping is the term for this action.

Hared and his cohorts were able to access email and other accounts after obtaining the victims' phone numbers. In the end, the attackers broke into their victims' cryptocurrency deposits using their access to the accounts.

A preliminary forfeiture order for 119.8 Bitcoin (BTC), worth $5.2 million, 93,420 Stellar Coins (XLM), and a 2017 BMW i8 was issued by a federal judge in San Francisco against Hared. Although Hared admitted guilt in 2019, many of the case's records are still open.
