  • The cost of creating deepfake videos on the dark web: $300 to $20,000

Kaspersky Lab experts analyzed ads offering services for creating deepfake videos on forums on the dark web. The cost of creating one minute of such a video ranges from $300 to $20,000. Deepfakes can be created for use in scams, political manipulation, revenge, and cyberbullying. Demand for related services and tools on the darknet far outstrips supply.

In a significant number of analyzed ads, they offer services for creating deepfakes for cryptofraud. This is a popular scam scheme in which attackers encourage viewers to transfer cryptocurrency to them. Fraudsters use fake celebrity videos to do this, or link old recordings to start live streaming on social media platforms. Usually they promise to double the payment sent to them. If a person believes the attacker, then he risks losing a large amount of money.

Dark web vendors also offer services for creating pornographic videos, and some develop instructions for generating such videos. Such deepfakes can be used, among other things, for harassment and blackmail.

“Deepfake technologies are neither bad nor good. What matters is how and for what purpose people use them. We see that attackers are increasingly using them to carry out various scams, including financial fraud,” the company’s expert comments.

To protect against cyber threats, Kaspersky Lab recommends that companies test cybersecurity measures and train employees to recognize deepfakes. Private users are advised to use security solutions and be critical of any information on the network.
