  • The FBI seized 13 services conducting DDoS attacks on order

The US Department of Justice announced the seizure of 13 domains associated with DDoS-for-hire platforms, also known as "booters" or "stressers".

The seizure is part of Operation PowerOFF, a coordinated international law enforcement operation aimed at disrupting online platforms that allow anyone to launch a massive DDoS attack against any target for a fee.

The FBI seized 48 booter service domains back in December 2022, with 10 previously suppressed platforms registering new domains to allow them to stay online.

The Justice Department said in a statement that 10 of the 13 seized domains are restarts of services that were seized in a previous raid in December that targeted 48 top booter services. For example, one of the domains seized this week - "cyberstress.org" - appears to be the same service that was running under the "cyberstress.us" domain, which was seized in December.

During the operation, the FBI tested the functionality of the captured booters and assessed the impact on target computers of DDoS attacks launched on computers controlled by the agency. To do this, FBI agents visited each service and either used previous login information or registered a new account on the service to carry out attacks.

The four defendants, who were charged in late 2022, also pleaded guilty earlier this year to federal charges and admitted to participating in or operating some of the booter services pursued by law enforcement.
