The hacker group says it was behind the outages.
A group of hackers calling itself Cyber Av3ngers said on social media that they had broken into ten water treatment plants in Israel. Cities like Hedera, Palmachim, Sorek, Ashkelon, Haifa, Khorazim, Kfar Haruv, Taberia, Eilat, and Daniel are all affected.
It wasn't possible to get proof that these objects were actually attacked. When asked about the details of what happened, IDE Technologies, which runs some of these facilities, did not respond. Hackers did, however, release a video that shows the software menu and the IDE Technologies logo can be seen there.
Video footage and statements from the group say that the hack shut down industrial systems that automatically watch over stations, sensors, and controls that let operators run the system by hand. There is a message on the screen showing the acidity level of the system that asks you to "stop cleaning" in one of the video frames.
The hackers also put out a video showing how to hack using the command line and giving out the IP addresses of the systems they broke into. These IP addresses are in the private segment and are linked to the company Siemens, which runs the software in the screenshot.
Cyber Avengers have said they will attack Israeli power plants online in the past. However, Kaspersky Lab's investigation showed that the claims about the first attack used pictures and information from a different hacktivist group called Moses Staff. This group is linked to Iran and wants to hurt Israeli businesses by "stealing and publishing sensitive data."
Securelist says that there is another active hacker group called "Cyber Avengers" that has been attacking Israeli organisations since 2020, mostly those in charge of the country's most important infrastructure. On the other hand, there are no known links between this group and the Cyber Av3ngers.
