  • The "offline" status of British Sky: an error or a hacker attack?

According to one version, hackers are responsible for this.

The UK government does not rule out the possibility that a cyber attack was responsible for the malfunctions in the country's air traffic control systems that caused significant flight delays.

To reduce the impact of malfunctions in the company's automated systems, ministers have consulted with the air traffic control company NATS (Britain's National Air Traffic Service). The failure, according to NATS, was the result of a "technical problem," but the cause was not stated. However, a former GCHQ employee and British intelligence source says there is evidence to support the theory that a hacker attack was to blame.

The authorities are still looking into different explanations even though they have not yet found any obvious indicators of "suspicious" activity.

Transport Secretary of State Mark Harper advised travelers to review the Civil Aviation Service's policies for potential compensation for delays. The automated systems had malfunctioned, Secretary Swella Braverman emphasized, so procedures were being carried out by hand. Engineers are actively trying to find a solution, she continued.

In the past, hackers attempting to obstruct European airspace have turned to air traffic control systems as a target. Recall that pro-Russian hackers' attempt to obstruct the work of the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation in April of last year was unsuccessful.

To address the ensuing air traffic chaos, the Liberal Democrat Party has requested that Rishi Sunak call an urgent Cobra meeting. Vera Hobhouse, a representative for the transportation party, expressed worry that "millions of vacationers could face major disruption due to this malfunction in the coming days."
