  • UK builds DDoS service sites to identify cybercriminals

If you want to catch a criminal, think like a criminal.

The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) has reported that the agency has set up several fake "DDoS-on-demand" (DDoS-for-hire) sites to identify cybercriminals who use these services to attack organizations.

The NCA reports that several thousand people accessed fake sites that looked like a real DDoS-for-hire service. However, instead of providing access to DDoS tools, the sites simply collected information about visitors.

On one of its sites, after the data was collected, the NCA placed a banner that informs the user that his data has been collected and that law enforcement will contact him shortly.

“The National Crime Agency has collected significant data on who has accessed our domain. We will share this data with international law enforcement agencies for action. Law enforcement will contact the relevant UK authorities,” the banner says.

These fake sites are part of Operation PowerOFF. Law enforcement agencies of the Netherlands, Great Britain, Serbia, Croatia, Spain, Italy, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada and the USA are participating in the international police operation.

UK users will be contacted by the NCA and foreign user data will be shared with the relevant law enforcement authorities.

"Operation PowerOFF has already resulted in the arrest of many individuals and continues to ensure that users are held accountable for their criminal activities," the NCA notes.
“We will not disclose how many sites we have and how long they have been running. Going forward, people who want to use DDos-for-hire services will not be sure who is really behind the service, so why take the risk?” NCA agent Alan Merrett comments.

In December 2022, the US Department of Justice confiscated 48 domains and charged six suspects with administering booter services. In addition, the suspects are accused of using IP stressors against foreign networks and servers, which is against the law.
