An unnamed elite Chinese intelligence-linked group has stepped up its activities this year, targeting sensitive data from companies and government agencies in the United States and dozens of other countries, according to researchers at the consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
Over the past year, the group has attacked dozens of US organizations, including government agencies and software and technology companies. Which companies were the victims, PwC did not specify.
Attackers scour the networks for foreign or trade policy information, but also use cryptocurrency scams. This group is the most active and influential of all that PwC monitors. Hackers are operating on a global scale, having attacked organizations in at least 35 countries in 2022 alone, according to PwC experts.
PwC researcher Kris McConkey has previously uncovered the group's campaigns, and sometimes pinpointed the alleged locations of hackers from China, Iran and elsewhere.
Another expert, Adam Cosey, who followed Chinese hackers at the FBI from 2011 to 2013, said that Chinese People's Liberation Army officers carried out cyberattacks against Chinese opponents, in particular in Taiwan. He stressed that this is China's main disinformation activity.
In their investigations, the FBI and the Department of Justice rely on such disclosures by private investigators.
