  • A hacker gained access to a closed FBI social network and stole the personal data of civil servants

    Last week, a hacker named USDoD on the BreachForums posted samples from the InfraGard database, and he is selling the entire database for $50,000 on the dark web. The hacker gained access to the InfraGard portal by posing as the CEO of a financial institution.

    InfraGard members are the real critical infrastructure of the FBI. The service includes:

    • business leaders;
    • IT specialists;
    • military;
    • state and local law enforcement agencies;
    • civil servants involved in security oversight of all sectors - energy, transport, finance, etc.

    The database contains the names, jobs and contact information of over 80,000 InfraGard users.

    In a conversation with independent cybersecurity researcher Brian Krebs, the hacker claimed that the records of 47,000 forum members contain unique emails. However, the data does not contain social security numbers or dates of birth. Although there were fields for this information in the database, InfraGard users left them blank.

    The cybercriminal sent messages to members of InfraGard posing as the CEO of a financial company in order to obtain more personal data that could be used for criminal purposes.

    The FBI did not explain how the hacker was able to gain access to the InfraGard. According to Krebs, when applying for membership in InfraGard, the attacker provided an email that was controlled by the FBI, as well as the real phone number of the CEO.

    The hacker applied in November, and InfraGard approved it in early December. According to the cybercriminal, information from the database was easy to retrieve using a simple programming script.

    The FBI did not provide comment and said it was investigating the incident.

    InfraGard is a social program through which the FBI shares confidential information about national security and cybersecurity threats with government officials and private sector entities that manage critical US infrastructure. In other words, the service serves as a closed social network for insiders and the FBI.
