  • ChatGPT will help even an inexperienced hacker to create dangerous malware


    CyberArk Labs analysts have described how to create polymorphic malware using ChatGPT. The researchers plan to publish part of their work "for educational purposes."

    The experts bypassed ChatGPT's content filters and showed how “with minimal effort, you can continuously request a unique, functional and proven piece of code from ChatGPT. An attacker can create polymorphic malware that is not detected by security tools and does not leave traces in memory.

    To bypass the content filter, analysts “persuaded” ChatGPT to write the program code, describing their request in detail. The chatbot created a piece of code for injecting a DLL into the "explorer.exe" process in Windows and encoded it in base64. The researchers then created a shellcode injector using ChatGPT.

    The use of ChatGPT in creating malware allows an attacker to create a reliable 1-day exploit with minimal effort, which will cause alarm for security solution providers, because at the moment, security software developers are not focused on malware created by ChatGPT.

    In addition, Check Point researchers showed how attackers ask other cybercriminals how best to use a stolen credit card to pay for an OpenAI subscription, as well as how to bypass IP address verification, phone number verification, and other geo-controls designed to block users from accessing to the chatbot.

    The research team also found several guides on the darknet forums on how to bypass OpenAI SMS verification and register with ChatGPT. According to experts, hackers are most likely trying to implement and test ChatGPT in their criminal operations. Cybercriminals are increasingly interested in ChatGPT because the AI technology behind a chatbot can make attacks more cost-effective and less labor intensive.
