  • Cybercriminals use the ChatGPT API to bypass content restrictions

The API version of the chatbot allows you to create malware directly in Telegram.

Security researchers at security firm Check Point Research said hackers have developed a way to bypass ChatGPT's restrictions and are using it to sell services that allow cybercriminals to create malware and phishing emails.

This method works using the ChatGPT API, not the web interface. ChatGPT makes the API available to developers so they can integrate the AI bot into their applications, including Telegram channels. It turns out that the API version does not impose content restrictions and allows you to freely create malicious content such as phishing emails and malicious code.

A user on one forum is now selling a service that combines the ChatGPT API and the Telegram messenger. The first 20 requests are free, then $5.50 for every 100 requests.

Check Point researchers tested a way to circumvent the restrictions and as a result compiled a phishing email and a script that steals PDF documents from an infected computer and sends them to an attacker via FTP.

In addition, other forum members post a small bash script for free that bypasses the ChatGPT restrictions and uses it for any malicious activities, such as developing malware.

Representatives of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, did not answer the question whether the company is aware of the results of the study and whether it plans to change the API.

In addition, Check Point researchers earlier Research previously found that ChatGPT can be used to develop a script to create a darknet marketplace where compromised credentials, payment card information, malware, and other illegal goods can be bought. The code uses a third party API to get current prices for Monero, Bitcoin and Etherium cryptocurrencies. This helped the user to set prices when making purchases.

And in January, CyberArk Labs experts were able to bypass ChatGPT content filters and create polymorphic malware that is not detected by security tools and does not leave traces in memory. To bypass the content filter, analysts “persuaded” ChatGPT to write the program code, describing their request in detail. The chatbot created a piece of code for DLL injection ( DLL Injection ) and encoded it in base64. The researchers then created a shellcode injector using ChatGPT.
