  • [NON-INSURANCE CASE] data leak of 4 million Japanese customers of Aflac and Zurich

    The reason for this leak was a hack by a third-party service provider that works with insurance companies.

    The data of 3.2 million Aflac cancer insured customers and almost 760,000 Zurich auto insurance policy holders in Japan was leaked to the Web. It is not yet known whether the attackers managed to steal the personal information of customers from other countries.

    Both companies said they have launched an investigation and are cooperating with Japanese authorities. The organization was blamed entirely on a third-party contractor whose servers were hacked on January 7th.

    It is not clear if the two data breaches are related. Neither Aflac nor Zurich named the contractor, limiting themselves to apologies and saying that the hacked service provider was from the United States.

    Aflac reported that hackers stole the following customer information:

    Surnames;
    Age;
    Sex;
    Insurance policy data.

    Despite this, company representatives believe that attackers will not be able to harm customers with such a set of data on hand.

    And according to Zurich, cybercriminals stole a data set containing:

    full names;
    Sex;
    date of birth;
    Email addresses;
    Insurance policy numbers.

    In an attempt to smooth things over a bit, the company said the hackers were unable to steal customer bank account information or credit card numbers.

    It is not yet known who is behind such a large data leak - not a single group is in a hurry to take responsibility.
