  • Does weed disrupt the immune system?

Weed (primarily delta-9-THC) will have an "immunosuppressive" effect, however, weaker than aspirin. THC acts on special cells called macrophages through receptors similar to those found in the brain. However, macrophages are not stimulated, but put to sleep when exposed to these receptors. This effect is temporary (like the "high") and passes fairly quickly.

People suffering from multiple sclerosis sometimes use this effect to fight the disease. Recent studies have shown that THC metabolites persist in the lungs for up to seven months after smoking cessation, and may affect the lung immune system, but macrophages are not "turned off" as they are when smoking. The effect on the lungs of the smoking process itself is obviously much more harmful than the effects of THC metabolites and lasts longer.

However, doctors have not yet decided whether weed increases the risk of a cold or not. With the possible exception of data on bronchitis (again, directly related to the process of smoking), there are no figures that would imply that weed increases the risk of colds ... but this did not stop Carlton Turner, the Drug Czar of the United States, from repeatedly stating in public speeches that weed causes AIDS and homosexuality. His claims, however, were so ludicrous that when the Washington Post and Newsweek made him look like a complete clown, he was forced to retract his claims.

On the contrary, weed helps AIDS patients control some of the symptoms of the disease without causing any complications. Some research suggests that it even stimulates some form of immunity. Attempts have been made to study the main effects of cannabis on the immune system of a healthy person, but if the weed has any effects, good or bad, they are either too weak or too unstable to be clearly demonstrated.
