  • Hackers buy online ads to install malware

Researchers at cybersecurity company Trend Micro have discovered new Royal malware, which is a beta version of the Roy/Zeon ransomware associated with the Conti syndicate.

According to Trend Micro, the Royal ransomware targets mainly victims in the United States, Brazil, and Mexico. Royal is delivered using a callback phishing attack, as a result of which the attackers convince the victim to install remote access software.

Trend Micro's investigation revealed that compiled Royal malware is used to drop the tools needed to infiltrate a victim's system - QakBot and Cobalt Strike for lateral movement, and a NetScan to find remote systems connected to the network.

After infiltrating a system, attackers use PCHunter, PowerTool, GMER, and Process Hacker to disable all services associated with security software. They then extract the victim's data using the RClone tool. In one attack, the attackers used the ADFind tool to search for Active Directories and then launched the RDPEnable remote management tool on the infected machine.

The FBI noted that cybercriminals use domains that mimic those of legitimate companies and buy advertising services to promote their phishing sites in search results. In addition, the purchased ads were used to spoof financial platform websites, in particular cryptocurrency exchange services.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a warning to U.S. healthcare organizations in connection with the ongoing cyberattacks by the Royal ransomware group. After analyzing the gang's previous successful attacks, HHS security researchers concluded that this group of hackers is exclusively targeting medical facilities and is a threat to the entire public health sector.
