  • Hackers have stolen more than $3.3 billion in cryptocurrency within a year

Most of the attacks took place in the fall of 2022, when hundreds of millions of dollars were stolen from cryptocurrency exchanges.

Blockchain security company PeckShield said that since the beginning of this year, cybercriminals have stolen about $3.37 billion worth of cryptocurrencies, with $1.3 billion of them in September, October and November 2022.

In September, there were 17 hacks that brought hackers a profit of $171 million. Among them is an attack on the Wintermute cryptocurrency market maker, during which $160 million was stolen. Of the 90 assets that were hacked, only two were worth more than $1 million (and no more than $2.5 million).
October saw 44 cyberattacks worth $760.2 million, including a $533 million BNB Chain hack. However, the attackers were able to withdraw only $100 million, the other part of the funds was frozen by the platform.
In November, there were 29 hacks that resulted in the theft of $391 million in various digital assets. These attacks include the $28 million Deribit hack and the theft of more than $600 million in assets from the bankrupt FTX exchange.

For comparison, over the entire summer, as a result of cyberattacks, hackers stole about $446 million worth of cryptocurrency. For example, in June, a hacker hacked into the Horizon blockchain bridge operating on the Harmony network and stole $100 million worth of cryptocurrency . The attacker made 11 transactions within 18 minutes. After that, he began transferring tokens for exchange for Ethereum to the Uniswap decentralized exchange.
