  • Iboga: a psychedelic that has become a national treasure

The African forest shrub, Tabernanthe iboga, often referred to simply as iboga, is unremarkable and easily lost in the beautiful rainforest scenery. If you don't know what it looks like, then most likely you will pass by. However, iboga is an unusual plant. Its bark contains the psychoactive alkaloid ibogaine, which stimulates the central nervous system when eaten.

The Bwiti people and their Bantu predecessors have used iboga root bark for at least a hundred years for healing, hunting, rituals, celebrations, and personal growth. More recently, this herb has been used around the world as a therapeutic psychedelic and alternative drug for addiction recovery.

But how was iboga first discovered? And how did this nondescript shrub become a recognized entheogen in Gabon and a global therapeutic sensation?

    History

Bwiti followers from West African countries (Gabon, Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo) consider iboga a central part of their religion. Some say that people first noticed the shrub because of African boars. The animals dug holes in iboga roots and ate the bark, soon after which they fell into a frenzy. Bwiti followers began to experiment with the plant and quickly learned that small amounts of iboga reduced the need for sleep and increased alertness - this was especially useful during hunting. When used in large doses, the plant showed psychedelic properties that were perceived as sacraments: people were transferred to the other world, where they experienced death and rebirth. After that, their life became more spiritual and harmonious.

Bwiti ceremonies that use the plant include initiation into adulthood and rituals with music and dance to strengthen bonds between people and grant them the wisdom of unseen worlds. Participants of the rituals experience strong hallucinations and a feeling that they see through and absolutely clearly their lives, habits and past. Over time, as foreigners learned about some of these rituals, the iboga became dearly loved and known not only among the followers of the Bwiti.

By the end of the 1960s. the plant has become so revered and an integral part of the culture of Gabon that the country's first president strongly defended it and emphasized its importance. In 2000, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Gabon declared iboga a national treasure. Like ayahuasca in Peru, iboga is protected by the state and officially recognized as a cultural heritage.

    Spread of iboga

Although it is not known for certain how and when iboga made its way from West Africa to other countries, ibogaine advocate Howard Lotsof first began to talk about it actively in 1962 as a treatment for opiate addiction. This happened after iboga allegedly helped him stop using heroin. Lotsof went further and wrote several scientific papers on the subject, paving the way for the FDA's clinical trials.

Iboga treatment centers are now popping up around the world as an alternative to traditional indefinitely extended rehabilitation programs and prescription drugs. The benefits of these centers are enormous: with the right guidance and in the right setting, just one session can be an incredibly powerful and life-changing experiment.

    Ibogaine therapy

What sets ibogaine therapy apart from other therapies is the intensity of the psychedelic experience, which allows a person to reach a level of reflection that is not normally possible. According to the descriptions, its action is similar to LSD, but it is stronger and lasts longer, drastically changing the habitual train of thought of a person. As a result, he can take a fresh look at his past experiences, behaviors and choices made.

The biggest benefit of ibogaine therapy is the ability of the plant to cure addiction at the root. Patients manage to analyze their lives in such a way that recovery becomes possible. The difference from traditional counseling and other methods is that ibogaine "rewrites" a person's internal attitudes, setting him up for a positive attitude towards life and the future, and not strengthening him in a sense of his own failure.

In addition, ibogaine has the mysterious ability to significantly reduce or completely eliminate withdrawal symptoms even in the most advanced cases, all it takes is just one dose. Alcoholics and drug addicts who are already addicted often experience the fear of withdrawal during detox before they even begin to deal with the underlying emotional and psychological problems. Patients who have taken ibogaine claim that these symptoms disappear after treatment, allowing the psychedelic experience to be analyzed without the use of substitute substances.
