  • Lawmakers across the country are considering proposals aimed at psychedelic reform

The year 2023 is starting off with a lot of activity in the field of reforms related to the so-called “natural psychedelics”: Politicians, both local and regional, literally across America, are proposing and considering the adoption of bills and civic initiatives aimed at increasing the availability of such substances to the population. Although most of these initiatives only talk about the decriminalization of psychedelic substances, some of them quite specifically propose to fully legalize their use and production.

In particular, by the beginning of the year, psychedelic reform initiatives are being considered in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota, Montana, New York, New Jersey, Oregon, and Virginia.

At the moment, a formal regional reform in relation to substances of this type has come in Oregon, in relation to psilocybin, and also in Colorado, where since the beginning of the year, a region-wide reform to decriminalize natural psychedelics and other psychoactive substances with the potential of use in medicine has formally begun to operate. Currently, Governor Jared Polis and the state government are planning to develop and approve a basic set of regulations for this market in order to ensure its orderly operation as soon as possible.

New Jersey and California, in turn, will consider projects aimed at fully legalizing the production of psilocybin, including its home cultivation for personal use. In the case of these states, the projects involve the establishment of a full-fledged commercial market system by private enterprises of various types, regulated by a central certification bureau. At the same time, it is worth noting that in California, Parliament will reconsider an amended version of a similar reform bill, which was rejected at the end of 2021, at the last stage of consideration.

The remaining regions on the list will be considering initiatives to legalize the use of psilocybin and MDMA, which are currently undergoing clinical trials at the U.S. Sanitary Lab, under controlled medical conditions, and decriminalize them to allow the possession of more or less large quantities of these substances. These projects, in general, provide for the possibility of deregulating the system, as well as the release of psilocybin and MDMA into free circulation on the market, if the substances are approved for release by the sanitary service and the government. Of course, this list also does not take into account the literally hundreds of such initiatives aimed at legalizing or decriminalizing natural psychedelics at the local level that exist in every region of the country.
