  • Meta steals personal data even if you don't use social media

    Popular online tax filing platforms TaxAct, TaxSlayer, and H&R Block sent sensitive financial information to Meta via a tracking pixel.

    Researchers at The Verge found that a tracking pixel on organizations' websites violated Meta's privacy policy by sending the following information:

    • Client's name;
    • E-mail address;
    • Income information;
    • The amount of loans;
    • The amount of the debt.

    Facebook may use information from tax websites to customize its advertising algorithms, even if the tax customer does not have a Facebook account.

    The experts also found that TaxAct was feeding similar information (without customer names) to Google through its analytics tool. A Google spokesperson said that any data in Google Analytics is not linked to a specific person, and company policy prohibits customers from submitting data that can be used to identify a user. In addition, Google has strict policies regarding advertising based on sensitive information.

    A spokesman for Ramsey Solutions, which uses the TaxSlayer service, said the firm "Didn't know Facebook collects personal tax information through the tracking pixel" and asked TaxSlayer to disable the pixel in SmartTax.

    H&R Block stated that it has "removed tracking pixels from the site to prevent the collection of any customer tax information.

    According to TaxAct, the data collected is used by TaxAct on an aggregate rather than an individual level to analyze the effectiveness of the firm's advertising. TaxAct does not use customer information for targeted advertising on Facebook.
