Microsoft has updated its Universal Licensing Terms for Online Services to prohibit cryptocurrency mining on any Microsoft service without the company's prior approval. The ban also applies to the Microsoft Azure cloud computing service.
"Neither the customer nor those accessing the Online Service through the customer may use the Online Service to mine cryptocurrencies without the prior written permission of Microsoft," the updated rules state.
Users now need to obtain prior written approval from Microsoft before using online cryptocurrency mining services, regardless of the subscription period. Cryptocurrency mining permission “may be considered for security testing and research.”
Microsoft made the change because "cryptocurrency mining can disrupt or even degrade online services, and can often be associated with cyber fraud and unauthorized access to and use of customer resources."
