  • NASA worries US could lose space race with China

NASA chief Bill Nelson said China could control territory and resources on the moon if it landed astronauts and built critical infrastructure ahead of the United States.

Founded just under 30 years ago, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) has made incredible strides in space exploration. It sent the first ever lander to the far side of the moon, became the second space agency to successfully land a rover on Mars, and recently completed construction of the Tiangong orbital station.

Like NASA, CNSA also plans to build a research facility on the Moon to better understand the solar system, visit Mars, and possibly reach previously unexplored places. Whether China will work with the US to share space and resources in space is unclear, Nelson said, as the two countries struggle to find water ice and valuable minerals on the moon.

“We are in the space race. It is a fact! We need to make sure they don't take their place on the Moon ahead of us under the guise of scientific research," Nelson said.

Nelson warned that NASA must keep up with its competitors and that the next 2 years will be critical to gaining a foothold on the Moon.

China has made tremendous strides and achievements in the past decade, he said. The date of their landing on the moon is getting closer and closer. At the South Pole of the Moon, there are a lot of places suitable for collecting water and minerals.

However, Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, downplayed the country's pretensions to competition. He said China supports the peaceful use of outer space, opposes the arms race in outer space, and is actively working to build a community in the space field. "Space is not a battlefield."

China and the US signed the Outer Space Treaty, an international agreement promising peaceful exploration of the moon. More than 100 countries have pledged to follow the treaty's guidelines, which state that outer space is free for exploration and use by all parties and that no weapons of mass destruction can be placed in orbit or on celestial bodies.

Recent NASA research has shown that the winter season on Mars lasts several months with a minimum temperature of -123.3℃ and cube-shaped snowflakes. What's more, when spring arrives, the melting ice is torn apart by underground geysers.
