And over the past 5 years, the amount stolen is about $1.2 billion.
North Korean hackers have stolen about $1.2 billion worth of virtual assets over the past five years, according to South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS). More than half of that amount ($626 million) was stolen this year.
South Korea's National Intelligence Service said North Korean hackers are considered among the best at stealing crypto assets as North Korea was forced to focus all its efforts on cybercrime after tightening UN economic sanctions in 2017 in response to nuclear and missile tests.
NIS added that more than $78 million of the total amount stolen belongs to South Korea.
Information security experts believe that next year there will be even more cyber attacks on the cryptocurrency industry, and North Korean APT groups will focus on stealing South Korean technologies and confidential information about South Korea's foreign policy and national security.
