  • Play ransomware group hacked major cloud service provider Rackspace

Attackers infiltrated the Rackspace email service using a zero-day exploit.

Rackspace has officially confirmed that Play was responsible for the Dec. 2 cyber attack. The attackers gained access to the Rackspace Hosted Exchange email service using a zero-day exploit.

According to company representatives, the exploit is related to the privilege escalation vulnerability under the identifier CVE-2022-41080 . An investigation by Rackspace found that hackers were able to access the emails, calendars, task lists, address book, and other data in the PST (Personal Storage Table) files of 27 Rackspace clients. However, the company stated that there is no evidence of the use or dissemination of this data. The organization is now planning to retire Hosted Exchange and migrate 30,000 customers to the new Microsoft 365 platform.

It is worth noting that the message about what happened followed a report by the cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike, which shed light on a new attack method used by the Play group. Called OWASSRF, the technique is used to carry out cyberattacks on Exchange servers that have not been patched to address the CVE-2022-41040 and CVE-2022-41082 vulnerabilities. Using CVE-2022-41080 and CVE-2022-41082 in sequence allows hackers to remotely execute arbitrary code bypassing Outlook Web Access (OWA) blocking rules, experts say.
