  • Poland warns of Ghostwriter attacks

The Polish government is warning of a surge in cyberattacks by Russian-linked hackers, including a state-sponsored hacker group known as GhostWriter. In an announcement on Poland's official website, the government claims that hostile cyber activity has intensified, targeting public domains and government entities, strategic energy and weapons suppliers and other important organizations.

The Polish believe that Russian hackers are targeting their country because they continue to support Ukraine in the ongoing military conflict with Russia.

The first case reported by the Polish government is a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack on the parliament website (“sejm.gov.pl”), attributed to the pro-Russian so-called hacktivists “NoName057(16)”. The attack unfolded a day after parliament passed a resolution recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, which made the site inaccessible to the public.

Another notable incident mentioned in the announcement is a phishing attack attributed to the GhostWriter group. Cybersecurity firm Mandiant also linked the hacker group to the Belarusian government.

According to the Polish, Russian hackers set up websites that posed as the state domain gov.pl, promoting fake financial compensation for Polish residents, allegedly backed by European funds. By clicking on the built-in button to learn more about the program, victims are taken to a phishing site where they are asked to pay a small verification fee.

“Increasingly, cyberattacks are being used to spread Russian disinformation and serve Russian intelligence agencies to collect data and sensitive information,” the Polish government explained.

GhostWriter has been active since at least 2017, having previously observed impersonating journalists from Lithuania, Latvia and Poland to spread false information and anti-NATO narratives to local audiences.

The announcement warns that GhostWriter has been focusing on Poland lately, trying to hack email accounts to gather information and take control of social media accounts to spread false information.
