  • Private firm plans to build hemp neighborhood in Kansas City

Besa Hospitality Group (BHG), a Missouri-based hospitality company, recently announced that it is developing a "hemp neighborhood" project that will be located in the suburbs of Kansas City, along the Missouri River. The plan, according to the company, has been in the making for some time, becoming possible only recently, in light of the region's acceptance of full cannabis reform in a public referendum earlier this month.

At its core, the "hemp quarter" will be a separate entertainment complex where the use of cannabis will be allowed. The plans of the complex, which is proposed to be built in the settlement of River Bend, include a concert amphitheater for 14,000 seats, a festival venue, two indoor concert halls, as well as a conference center where various thematic mass events and holidays can be held. Also, the complex will house shops and restaurants, in addition to direct points of sale of cannabis products. As expected, all public areas of the complex will have areas for the free use of cannabis products.

The complex, called the Smokey River Entertainment District, will be supplied by BesaMe Wellness, a local medical cannabis company.

“We expect this complex to become a magnet for tourists from all over the country and to normalize cannabis and cannabis use among Missourians themselves,” said Joey Pintozzi, BHG vice president of marketing.
“Of course, first of all, the enterprise is an entertainment center. The areas for the use of cannabis are its special feature, which other similar complexes in the region do not have.”

Presumably, the complex will already be partially ready for operation by mid-spring next year, but its full completion is planned only by spring 2024.

Representatives of the company hope to attract both regional and national theater troupes, musicians, and other events to hold regular shows at the complex. Similarly, the authors of the project hope to attract new brands and sponsors from the hemp industry as it develops in the region. At the moment, only companies producing therapeutic cannabis have certificates to work, and the first recreational producers are unlikely to appear in the region until next spring.
