  • Rail giant Wabtec discloses data breach

    American railroad and locomotive company Wabtec Corporation has uncovered a data breach that exposed personal and confidential information.

    Wabtec is an American public company that manufactures modern locomotives and rail systems. The company employs about 25,000 people and is present in 50 countries, being the world leader in the freight locomotive market and a major player in the transit segment.

    In a year-end announcement, Wabtec reveals that hackers compromised their network and installed malware on certain systems as early as March 15, 2022.

    On June 26, Wabtec said it had detected unusual activity on its network, leading to an investigation into the attack and whether the hackers had stolen data. The next day, news outlets reported that sources at one of the Wabtec factories indicated that it was a ransomware attack affecting the railroad giant. However, the company has not officially responded to the rumors.

    A couple of weeks later, LockBit released samples of the data stolen from Wabtec and eventually leaked all of the stolen data onto the dark web on August 20, 2022, allegedly after a ransom was not paid.

    As Wabtec now explains, the investigation into the incident was completed on November 23, 2022, when data scientists confirmed that LockBit had stolen files containing sensitive personal information.

    This stolen data exposed a wide range of sensitive information, including:

    • Full Name;
    • Date of Birth;
    • National identification number outside the USA;
    • Social Security number or tax code outside the United States;
    • Passport ID;
    • IP address;
    • Employer identification number (EIN);
    • USCIS or Alien Registration Number;
    • NHS (National Health Service) number (UK);
    • Medical card / health insurance information;
    • Photography, Gender / Gender Identity;
    • Salary, social security number (US);
    • Financial account information;
    • Payment card information;
    • Account username and password;
    • Biometric information;
    • Race / Ethnicity;
    • Criminal conviction or offense;
    • Sexual orientation / life;
    • Religious beliefs;
    • Union affiliation.
    “While there is no indication that any specific information has been or will be misused, given the nature of the incident and the personal data involved, we cannot rule out the possibility of fraud attempts.” - Wabtec.

    The company began sending data breach notifications to all affected individuals on December 30, 2022, but the exact number of people affected by the incident remains unknown.
