  • Russian man arrested in Canada for participating in LockBit campaigns

On November 10, Europol announced the arrest of a Russian citizen involved in LockBit ransomware attacks. The suspect was arrested on October 26 in the province of Ontario (Canada) after an investigation that lasted more than 2.5 years.

The investigation was led by the French National Gendarmerie with the assistance of the Europol European Cybercrime Center, the FBI and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

According to the US Justice Department, 33-year-old Mikhail Vasilyev, who holds dual citizenship of Russia and Canada, was charged with conspiracy to transfer ransom demands and intentionally damage protected computers. If found guilty, he faces up to 5 years in prison. He is currently awaiting extradition to the US for alleged involvement in the global LockBit ransomware campaign.

According to the criminal complaint, while searching his home in August 2022, Canadian law enforcement found screenshots of messages in Tox with a LockBit representative "LockBitSupp" that contained instructions on how to deploy a LockBit-developed Linux/ESXi blocker and malware source code.

In addition, "photographs of a computer screen with credentials for various services of employees of a company in Canada that was attacked by LockBit in January 2022" were found.

Law enforcement officers also seized 8 computers and 32 external hard drives, 2 firearms and cryptocurrency worth 400,000 euros from the suspect's home.

Europol added that this LockBit operator "was one of the important targets of Europol due to its involvement in numerous high-profile ransomware attacks." The arrested man is known for his large ransom demands - from 5 to 70 million euros. Although Europol describes the suspect as the "operator" of the LockBit ransomware, he is most likely an affiliate and not the group's chief of operations.
