The most common passwords of 2022, the danger in Sophos and McAfee products, and the new tool that will be the next Cobalt Strike.

NordPass has published a list of the most common passwords of 2022

Most of them are simply repetitions of a single character, sequences of easy-to-guess numbers, direct typing of letters, or simple combinations such as "pass@123".

NordPass noted that such passwords can be cracked in less than 1 second, and also said that passwords containing the words "oscars", "batman", "euphoria", "encanto" (names of popular films and series) were most often used this year.

Cisco Warns of Danger in Email Gateway

Cisco has released a report warning that the Sophos and McAfee scanning engines in the Cisco Secure Email Gateway could allow a remote, unauthorized attacker to bypass security tools.

The issue is related to the misidentification of potentially malicious emails or attachments. A cybercriminal can exploit this problem by sending a malicious email with malformed Content-Type (MIME type) headers from a vulnerable device.

An exploit could allow a hacker to bypass Sophos and McAfee's standard malware detection systems and successfully deliver malicious messages to end clients.

Proofpoint: Nighthawk could be the next Cobalt Strike

Proofpoint researchers warn that the Nighthawk pentest tool is becoming increasingly popular with attackers and will soon replace Cobalt Strike.

Nighthawk was discovered by Proofpoint experts in September of this year and described as "a commercially distributed RAT Trojan similar to other frameworks such as Brute Ratel and Cobalt Strike." Just like them, Nighthawk can quickly become popular with intruders.

According to Proofpoint, the Nighthawk has not been seen being used by cybercriminals, but experts expect the Nighthawk to become a popular hacker weapon sooner or later.

Nighthawk is developed by the European company MDSec, which offers clients tools and services for intruder behavior modeling and penetration testing.

MDSec carefully screens all buyers of Nighthawk licenses and only sells its product to certain countries (EU, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland and the USA). Also, Nighthawk is not distributed as a trial version, as this has already led to the abuse of other similar products.
