  • Sinbad mixer has already helped North Korea launder tens of millions of dollars

The new platform bypasses US sanctions and has already been used to launder the biggest robberies.

According to blockchain analysis firm Elliptic, the U.S.-blocked cryptocurrency mixer Blender was relaunched under a different name to avoid U.S. sanctions and was subsequently used by North Korean hackers to launder stolen cryptocurrencies.

Elliptic said crypto mixer Blender, which was sanctioned by the US after helping Pyongyang launder the proceeds of the Axie Infinity attack, has been renamed Sinbad. After launching in October 2022, Sinbad was first used to launder funds from the $100 million Horizon heist and has since laundered tens of millions of dollars worth of stolen cryptocurrencies for North Korea.

The firm states that Sinbad shares many similarities with Blender, such as:

The bitcoin wallet used to pay for the services of the people who promoted Sinbad received money from the wallet of the Blender operator.
The service address on the Sinbad website received bitcoins from a wallet linked to the Blender operator to test the service before launch.
Almost all of the early transactions on Sinbad (about $22 million) came from the wallet of the suspected Blender operator.
The specific characteristics of transactions and the use of other services to obfuscate transactions are very similar in both mixers.
Both services work with 10-digit mixer codes, letters of guarantee signed with a service address, and a maximum 7-day transaction delay.
Both services' website structure, language usage, and naming conventions are very similar.

According to Elliptic, the rebrand may have been done to gain user confidence following Blender's sudden closure in 2022 and the disappearance of significant amounts of funds from the mixer."

Blender, along with the US-blocked crypto mixer Tornado Cash, is believed to have helped North Korean hackers launder $625 million from the Axie Infinity attack, money likely to be used to finance the country's growing arms and nuclear programs.
