  • Substance use can trigger HPPD

    HPPD (Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder) is a long-term perception disorder caused by hallucinogens.

    This syndrome is unreasonably little studied and does not yet have a universal treatment. It is not necessary to use a lot or often, sometimes just one, even the first time, is enough to earn yourself such problems.

    HPPD is mainly caused by LSD (+ its analogs like NBOMe), MDMA (ecstasy), PCP, DMT, psilocybin, mescaline, as well as dissociative substances and even marijuana (including synthetic THC).

    The symptoms of HPPD are very similar to the trip itself, and the visuals can remain for a couple of months or for several years.

    HPPD has nothing to do with schizophrenia or psychosis, hallucinations notwithstanding. Unlike mental disorders, a person with this syndrome is aware of his violations.

    Common visual symptoms include:

    • enhanced color perception;
    • macropsia or micropsia (objects are perceived larger or smaller than in reality);
    • flashes of color in the visual field;
    • false silhouettes and their movement in the peripheral field;
    • loops from objects and auras around them;
    • geometric hallucinations;
    • afterimages.

    At first glance, the "special effects" listed above do not cause discomfort, but there are cases when people were very annoyed by these distortions, leading to panic attacks. Plus, this disorder is not limited to visual symptoms alone.

    They are accompanied by depersonalization and derealization. Detachment from reality, "life as in a dream", which is very tiring, not passing for a long time.

    Against the background, severe anxiety, severe depression can flourish.

    Salvation can be an appeal to a psychiatrist. Most often, patients with HPPD syndromes are prescribed a course of antidepressants and antipsychotics, tranquilizers and anticonvulsants. Sometimes nootropics are added to improve cognitive functions - with depression and depersonalization, they fall to the minimum.

    In practice, drug selection becomes a long experimental process.

    Due to the side effects that are more than characteristic of psychotropic drugs, many refuse treatment and end up experiencing trouble on their own.

    The official diagnosis most often made for HPPD symptoms is "psychotic reaction due to drug use."
