  • The American Medical Association predicts that by 2037, most regions of the country will legalize psychedelics

According to a new paper published on behalf of the editors of the publication on the pages of the medical journal of the US Medical Association (JAMA), by 2037, most regions of the country can legalize the use of psychedelics, both for therapeutic and recreational purposes. The organization cites data from a team of analysts at Washington University, St. Louis, who believe that such a development is highly likely given the rise in public and political prominence for the topic of therapeutic and personal use of psychedelics between 2019 and 2022. Recall that the beginning of this period was marked by the beginning of the decriminalization of psilocybin in Denver, Colorado, the experience of which has since been successfully adopted by other cities and regions.

The original calculation of researchers, in addition to already adopted projects, such as the legalization of psilocybin in Oregon, takes into account the dynamics of the development of reforms data from BillTrack50, LexisNexis and Ballotpedia. According to these sources, during the study period, in half of the regions of the country, 74 bills related to the legalization or decriminalization of psychedelics were proposed for consideration. Of these, 69 were proposed for consideration in the state parliament or other legislature, while the remaining 5 were initiatives on behalf of voters. 10 of them have been approved and 32 more are under consideration and development. Basically, these bills concern the settlement of the therapeutic use of psilocybin and MDMA, as well as the general decriminalization of "natural" psychedelics.

Analysts also note that due to the large and growing support for such reforms from all segments of the population (in particular, the public is open to the use of therapeutic psychedelics in the treatment of veterans, with almost universal support), the topic of reform has begun to gain popularity in political circles. In particular, according to experts, the idea of decriminalizing or regulating psychedelic drugs is supported by the majority of young and progressive politicians, both from the Democratic and Republican parties, which in fact inspires hope for the broad success of future reforms.

"The possibility of compromise by the parties on this issue will allow the necessary legislation to quickly move through all the formalities of their approval," analysts say.
“For this reason, it is safe to assume that substances such as psilocybin and MDMA will definitely be widely legalized by 2034 and 2037. It is possible that this reform will also be accompanied by no less extensive decriminalization of other similar substances, coming exclusively from the local and regional level.”

Of course, as the authors of the report note, the fate of the prognosis depends on the decision of the DEA and the sanitary service regarding the status of MDMA and psilocybin, however, given the data from private trials and early stages of clinical trials, it can be assumed with a large portion of confidence that the US authorities still recognize the healing potential of the substances.
