  • The police destroyed a large network of fraudulent call centers

The attackers stole 2 million euros from the Germans alone, and the total losses can be in the hundreds of millions.

Police made 15 arrests, questioned more than 260 people, and raided four call centers and more than a dozen residences. As it turned out during the investigation, the attackers worked in Germany, Serbia, Bulgaria and Cyprus.

Law enforcement authorities seized three hardware wallets with cryptocurrencies worth more than $1 million and more than 50,000 euros in cash, as well as three cars, various electronic equipment, data backups and documents.

Europol said in a statement that the suspects advertised themselves on social media to lure victims to crypto investment sites run by their accomplices. At first, the victims (mostly Germans) invested small three-figure sums, and then they were led to fake price hikes and persuasion of intruders who persuaded them to “invest” even more money.

According to law enforcement officials, the scammers earned more than 2 million euros from German citizens alone. And the total losses can be in the hundreds of millions, since the attackers worked in several other countries of Eastern Europe.
