  • The stoned ape theory

Did you know how the brain is transformed under the influence of psilocybin mushrooms? Modern scientists suggest that it was psilocybin that helped develop the monkey's brain to incredible capabilities, thereby turning the monkey into a man.

Drugs and our culture have been going side by side since ancient times. Ayahuasca sessions in the Amazon tribes, crazy Vikings who increase their physical activity with fly agarics are just a small part of how people gradually opened their minds to something new. But is psy culture really a human invention?

Terence McKenna is an iconic figure in the world of psychedelics. In one of his books, Food of the Gods: The Search for the Real Tree of Knowledge, one very interesting theory is described in great detail.

According to him, Homo Erectus (Hominidae) became Homo Sapiens after one of the monkeys accidentally tasted psilocybin mushrooms.

McKenna wrote that psilocybin caused a rapid reorganization of the primitive brain's ability to process information. This set in motion a rapid evolution of cognitive abilities, leading to early art, language, and technology. In simple terms, a random trip caused by eating a mushroom showed the monkeys that there is something beyond everyday instinctual needs.

As early humans, he says, we "ate our way into higher consciousness" by consuming these mushrooms, which he supposed grew on animal dung. Psilocybin, as McKenna said, "pulled us out of the animal mind into a world of articulated speech and imagination."

After all, it is consciousness, spirituality and culture that make us human beings. A society of scientists around the world was skeptical about this theory, but over the years, the world began to more thoroughly study the therapeutic properties of psychedelics and their effects on the brain, and today more and more scientists come to the conclusion that psilocybin has good properties for humans and can be used and should be used in medicine.

“I want to bring back the concept of the stoned ape,” Paul Stamets, the world's most renowned mycologist, told the crowd at the Psychedelic Science conference. “It is very important that you understand that 200,000 years ago the human brain suddenly doubled in size, and there is no explanation for this sudden change in the human brain.”

“I think this is a very, very plausible hypothesis to explain the sudden evolution of Homo sapiens from their primate relatives,” Stamets said. He was applauded vigorously.

Indeed, anthropologists say that between 2 million and 700 thousand years ago, the human brain doubled in size. Everyone who has tried psilocybin mushrooms can confirm with confidence that their impact on consciousness and the disclosure of new facets of personality is undeniable.

Personally, I think that this theory is quite the place to be. Consciousness is something intangible, not measurable. I do not believe that evolution could naturally come to this - culture, language, spirituality. Perhaps psilocybin gave us all this. And who knows, it is quite possible that after a while - this theory will be spoken of as a fact, and not as an assumption.
