  • The US has imposed a new package of sanctions against Tornado Cash

The US Department of the Treasury believes that the Lazarus group is laundering millions of stolen dollars using the platform.

The US Treasury Department has re-imposed sanctions on crypto mixer Tornado Cash, accusing the platform of helping North Korean government hackers launder more than $455 million stolen in March 2022.

State Department spokesman Ned Price said the mixer is supporting the Lazarus Group, a notorious hacking group that US law enforcement believes is working on behalf of the North Korean government.

"The use of Tornado Cash to launder stolen funds has become another trend of the North Korean regime, which is increasingly resorting to illegal activities to obtain money to develop its illegal weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs," Price said. "The United States is committed to countering North Korean cyberattacks and will continue to take action against organizations that help North Korean hackers."

Recall that not so long ago, an unknown North Korean group tried to rob an Israeli crypto company using an unknown cyberweapon. The attack of malefactors was not crowned with success and was quickly stopped by IT-specialists of the company.
