  • Twilio reported another attack on its systems

This week, telecoms provider Twilio reported that it faced another cybersecurity incident in June 2022 by the same attacker who accessed customer information in August.

The incident happened on June 29th. Then a Twilio employee was subjected to a vishing attack and provided his credentials, with which the attacker was able to access the contact information of a limited number of customers. Access was identified and stopped within 12 hours, and on July 2, 2022, the company warned affected customers.

Twilio did not disclose the exact number of affected customers, nor did it explain why the disclosure was made 4 months after the incident.

To mitigate such attacks in the future, Twilio distributes FIDO2 hardware security keys to employees, implements additional layers of control over its VPN network, and conducts cybersecurity training for employees.

Twilio, which offers personalized customer experience software, has over 270,000 customers and its Authy two-factor authentication service has about 75 million users.

The hacker who hacked into Twilio in early August launched a massive phishing campaign against 136 organizations that resulted in 9,931 accounts being hacked. Security company Group-IB called this campaign "0ktapus" because the original purpose of the attacks was to obtain Okta identities and two-factor authentication (2FA) codes from users of targeted organizations.
