  • US and Israel Vulnerable to Cyber Attacks

A warning to governments or a call to action for rivals in the cyber arena?

Former Israeli Air Force Captain Ariel Stern warns that the US and Israel are not currently ready to repel a cyberattack on the water sector that could be staged by enemy states.

According to the officer, countries such as Russia, Iran, North Korea and China could hit the industry with disastrous consequences. He noted that Iran is Israel's main adversary in this area.

According to The Jerusalem Post, Israel "does not have competent information security specialists in the water sector." One of the main problems of the industry is the lack of proper training of cybersecurity professionals.

A cyberattack on a waterworks or water utility can have wide-ranging consequences, as infrastructures serve vast areas, including many cities and states. In many cases, IT and OT networks are not separated and not designed for cyber defense. Another factor is automation, which means more systems are potentially vulnerable to vulnerabilities.

Stern explained that there are 55,000 different water operators in the US, but the majority of the population is served by a small number of operators that are subject to cyberattacks. He calls on these organizations to quickly take the necessary protective measures.

Stern also said the US government needs to issue an order as soon as possible that all organizations must meet a certain cybersecurity standard as many firms in the water sector continue to use substandard systems.

The US and Israel are not the only countries that are subject to cyberattacks. In August 2022, a ransomware attack on UK-based water supply company South Staffordshire Water disrupted its IT infrastructure.
