Freedom of the Press Foundation

The Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and defending public interest journalism focused on exposing mismanagement, corruption, and law-breaking in governments. Established in December 2012, the FPF has been at the forefront of advocating for transparency, promoting free speech, and protecting the rights of journalists worldwide. The organization's mission centers on ensuring that the public has access to critical information, fostering a more informed society.

FPF provides various forms of support to journalists and media organizations, including legal defense, technical assistance, and training in digital security practices. Recognizing the evolving challenges faced by journalists in the digital age, the Foundation places a significant emphasis on cybersecurity, offering tools and resources to help journalists protect themselves, their sources, and their work from surveillance and censorship.

One of the hallmark projects of FPF is SecureDrop, an open-source whistleblower submission system that allows journalists to securely receive documents from anonymous sources. This technology has become a critical tool for news organizations, enabling the secure and anonymous submission of sensitive information by whistleblowers, thereby facilitating investigative journalism that can hold powerful entities accountable.

The Foundation also engages in advocacy and public policy efforts aimed at protecting the freedom of the press and the public's right to know.
