  • The Intercept news organization

The Intercept is a prominent American nonprofit news organization that operates online, delivering in-depth articles and podcasts. Since its inception in 2014, it has made significant strides in investigative journalism, initially gaining attention for reporting on documents released by whistleblower Edward Snowden. The organization was founded by well-known journalists Glenn Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill, and Laura Poitras and launched by First Look Media with backing from eBay co-founder Pierre Omidyar.

In addition to its English-language content, The Intercept expanded its reach by launching a Portuguese edition in 2016, staffed by Brazilian journalists.

Over the years, The Intercept has navigated significant changes, including the departure of co-founders Greenwald and Poitras following disagreements over the organization's direction. In January 2023, it transitioned to an independent nonprofit organization after spinning off from the First Look Institute.

Financially, The Intercept has faced challenges, notably a substantial funding shortfall after receiving a partial grant from Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, before his bankruptcy. This financial hiccup resulted in a considerable budgetary gap and led to the layoff of 16 staff members, one-third of its newsroom, in February 2024.

Despite these hurdles, The Intercept remains dedicated to its mission of exposing corruption and injustice by investigating powerful individuals and institutions. It views journalism as a tool for civic action, aimed at empowering the public with the information needed to demand accountability and positive change from leaders and institutions. The organization's impactful journalism has led to legal reforms, new legislation, and has brought to light extensive national security programs that challenge civil liberties.

The Intercept continues to aspire to drive societal progress through rigorous and courageous reporting, holding steadfast in its belief that truthful journalism is essential for maintaining human rights and promoting a just future.
