The administration of US President Joe Biden is going to legalize the use of psilocybin mushrooms and ecstasy in medicine at the federal level within two years. Therefore, by August 2024, new treatments for various mental disorders may appear in the country.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration plans to legalize the use of MDMA to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psilocybin to treat depression within 24 months. To accomplish this task, the agency will coordinate the work of several federal agencies, in particular, the Division of Drug Enforcement, which, apparently, will have to reclassify the psychedelic and euphoric.
Biden is skeptical about the idea of drug legalization and does not want to lift the ban even on marijuana. But he advocates legalizing the use of magic mushrooms and ecstasy in medicine. This paradox is explained by the fact that his son Hunter beat his addiction to crack and alcohol with the help of a mind-expanding substance. The seriousness of the intention of officials to legalize psychoactive substances is evidenced by the creation of the Federal Task Force on the conduct of psychedelic therapy. This agency will issue grants to scientists for the study of consciousness-expanding substances and remove bureaucratic obstacles in their path. Politicians hope that, with government support, researchers will be able to revolutionize mental health care.
In 2020, Oregon became the first and so far the only US state to legalize medical psilocybin. In 2023, the region's authorities will begin accepting applications from commercial enterprises for the issuance of licenses giving the right to grow and process magic mushrooms. Accordingly, as early as next year, psilocybin therapy will be launched in Oregon and a psychedelic marketing model will be tested.
